  • Ages: 6 – 12 years
  • Fee: $20
Looking for something to do this Winter Break? Celebrate the season with activities and games focused on animal adaptations. Explore animal tracks, search for their homes and discover what it takes to survive winter.

Friday, January 4 - Creature Feature: Snakes


  • When: 1 – 3 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
Stop in anytime from 1 – 3 p.m. for a chance to meet our corn snake and hognose snake up close. Enjoy a snake themed craft and refreshments. What a great way to ask questions and discover what makes these animals so amazing!

Saturday, January 5 - Christmas Bird Count for Kids

  • Registration Required
  • When: 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street.
  • Ages: 5 – 15 years with an adult
Whether your child is curious about the natural world and loves to go birding or has never birded before. Amos Butler Audubon volunteers will help your child discover birding and hopefully light the curiosity for nature within them. The FREE event will include a session on birding basics, 90 minutes of birding fun, data collection, wrap up and awards ceremony. Bring binoculars or field guides if you have them. Dress for cold weather and hiking. This workshop is great for scouts working on badges. Registration is required as space is limited.


Friday, January 11 - Animal Adventures: Mice

  • Registration Required
  • When: 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
  • Where: Hussey-Mayfield Public Library and Zion Nature Center
  • Ages: 3 – 6 years with an adult
Meet at the Library for story time fun. Afterwards, we will walk to the Zion Nature Center to discover mice, and what they do in the winter months.


Saturday, January 12 - Boy Scout Saturday: Environmental Science

  • Registration Required
  • When: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Boy Scouts should come prepared with their blue card.
Park Naturalist and merit badge counselor Mindy Murdock will guide you through most of the requirements needed to earn your Environmental Science Merit Badge. Requirements include: History of Environmental Science, environmental terms, endangered species, and ecosystems. Registration is required as space is limited.

Saturday, January 19 - Birds of Prey

  • When: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Where: St. Vincent Community Room, Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak Street

Mark Booth of Take Flight Wildlife Education and his magnificent birds of prey are returning to Zionsville. Hawks, owls, falcons, and other raptors have long held our imagination. See what it’s like to be hawk-eyed or falcon-fast by meeting these magnificent predators up close and hearing the stories of our shared history.


Friday, January 25 - Mommy & Me: Animal Tracks

Give your toddler a fun and interactive introduction to nature in our Mommy and Me classes!  Each month will focus on a different topic and will feature live animal encounters, stories, crafts, and nature exploration. Due to school being in session, parking is not available at the Zion Nature Center.

Saturday, January 26 - Coffee with the Birds

  • When: 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street

Relax on this crisp winter morning with a cup of coffee and our feathered friends. We’ll talk bird feeders, seed, and what unusual birds you’ve seen at your feeders this season. Coffee is provided, but please bring your favorite mug.


Saturday, January 26 - Monthly Dog Walk 

  • When: 1 – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Elm Street Green, 165 Elm St.

Grab your closest canine companion and burn a few winter holiday calories on this brisk hike through the park.
