Zion Nature Center (ZNC) has been named the recipient of a $5,000 community grant from the Boone County Solid Waste Management District (BCSWMD). The grant will be used to build recycled lumber picnic tables for use at the ZNC.
The wood picnic tables currently at ZNC have reached the end of their life span and, according to Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock, it is not cost effective to continue to replace rotting boards. With the funds from this grand, ZNC will add 4 – 5 new recycled material picnic tables, each with a life span of 15+ years.
“The picnic tables are heavily use during summer programming,” said Murdock. “We see upwards of 200 children using them during our summer camp programs and over 4,000 visitors to ZNC in the summer months alone.”
Zionsville Parks will coordinate with area boy scouts to construct the picnic tables in time for the 2019 summer camp and programming season. Current department vendors will design the galvanized steel frames and the parks maintenance staff will assist with installation of the tables.
ZNC received the maximum amount BCSWMD awarded to any organization.
