Start your morning with a hike to spot birds! Join a Naturalist for a hike to see who’s fluttering around the park. All levels of birding experience welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few available to borrow.

Do you want to learn more about Natural History Topics? Check out our Monthly Nature 101 Workshop Series. Each month Naturalists from Zionsville Nature Center or guest speakers will present on a variety of nature topics. 

Want to learn about our native spring wildflowers but don’t know where to start? Join our Park Naturalists for an introductory class that covers our common spring ephemerals, field guide use, and how to use identification apps like iNaturalist. This program features an evening webinar with an optional Saturday field day to practice what you’ve learned.

Saturday, April 10 - Garden Seed Balls

Seed balls are perfect to make for spring! We’ll create several balls to take home made from natural materials. Plant them in your garden or give them as a gift this spring!

Tuesday, April 13 - Toddler Trek

  • Where: Zionsville Nature Center, 250 N 5th St
  • Ages: 5 & Under w/ Adult

Meet outside at the Library 5th St and join us for an exploration of Zion Nature Sanctuary. Afterwards check out the newly reopened Zionsville Nature Center.

Spending time outdoors has numerous benefits for a child’s physical and emotional well-being. During our Toddler Treks, we will meet at different Zionsville parks to play, explore, and watch the seasons change. Toddler Trek is rain or shine (except for severe weather). Dress for the weather and be prepared to get moving!

Tuesday, April 20 - Composting 101

  • When: 6:30 – 7:30 pm
  • Registrants will receive a Zoom link to attend the webinar

Compost is what you get when yard debris, kitchen scraps, grass clippings and other organic materials break down into a rich, dark, crumbly material. Recycling food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and recycling nutrients. Join the Zionsville Parks and Recreation for an evening discussion on the benefits of compost, the different types of compost systems, and how you can begin composting at home.

Pull for Parks Garlic Mustard Removal

The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department provides drop-in service opportunities for community members. If a volunteer is under the age of 16, they   must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.

These events generally last 2-3 hours and are the perfect opportunity to spend some time giving back or fulfilling a service hour requirement. For move volunteer opportunities check out http://www.zionsville-in.gov/609/Volunteering

Monday, April 26 - National Audubon Day Bird Walk

Celebrate National Audubon Day by heading out to spot birds! WE will learn the history of John James Audubon and other early ornithologists while seeing how many birds we can spot in the park.

Tuesday, April 27 - Toddler Trek: Bird Babies

  • Where: Zion Nature Sanctuary, 690 Beech Street (Park in the Library 6th Street Parking Lot)
  • Ages: 5 & under w/ adult

This week’s Toddler Trek will be focused on birds in celebration of Bird Zionsville Week! Let’s learn about nests, eggs, and bird babies while out for a fun walk in the woods!

Wednesday, April 28th - Beginning Bird Feeding

  • When: 10 - 11 am
  • Registration Required
  • Where: Zionsville Nature Center (meet at the 5th Street entrance to the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library, 250 N 5th St)
  • Ages: All Ages

Learn how easy it is to get started feeding the birds in your backyard!  Staff from the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Carmel will be at the library installing a new bird viewing area for our visitors to enjoy.  They will demonstrate how to install a bird feeder pole system and share tips on choosing feeders and food, feeder setup and placement, and critter-proofing.  They will be happy to answer any questions you have. This program will take place outdoors so please dress accordingly.

Thursday, April 29 & Saturday, May 1 - Nature 101: Birding for Beginners

Do you want to learn more about birds but don’t know where to start? This introductory class will cover identification of common backyard birds, binocular use, and how to attract birds to your yard. This program features a Thursday evening webinar with an optional Saturday morning field day to practice what you’ve learned.
