Join us at the Zion Nature Center to learn how you can start your summer garden right now! Learn tips and tricks for starting your plants both indoors and outdoors. We’ll explore the different resources available near you to start your best garden yet! Registration is required as space is limited.

Saturday, March 9 - Frog Songs & Salamander Wiggles

Our local amphibians are beginning to awaken. Join Park Naturalist, Mindy Murdock, as we explore frogs and salamanders. Who croaks, peeps, and ker-plunks in our Indiana ponds and streams?

Friday, March 15 - Animal Adventures: Opossums

  • Where: Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and Zion Nature Center
  • Ages: 3 – 6 years with an adult
Meet at the Library for story time fun. Afterwards, we will walk to the Zion Nature Center to discover the interesting and unique opossum, Indiana’s only marsupial.

Saturday, March 16 - Search for Green Dog Walk

  • When: 1 – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
Spring is right around the corner. Join us as we search for those first signs of green on a walk through the Zion Nature Sanctuary. Then stop in at the Zion Nature Center after the walk to collect some dog friendly treasure.

Wednesday, March 20 - When to Break Up with Your Plant

Having trouble with a plant? Unable to decide if the plant needs special care or should you cut your losses and replace? Join Myrene Brown of Myrene's Garden for a program devoted to deciding if you are better with or without a plant. Registration is required as space is limited.

Friday, March 22 - Mommy & Me: Turtles

Give your toddler a fun and interactive introduction to nature in our Mommy & Me classes! Each month we will focus on a different topic and will feature live animal encounters, stories, crafts and nature exploration. Due to school being in session, parking is not available at the Zion Nature Center. We will meet at the elementary school gates at 9:30 a.m. and walk to the Nature Center together.

Wednesday, March 27 - Certified Wildlife Habitat Workshop 

Aaron Stump, Habitat Programs Manager with Indiana Wildlife Federation, presents a unique educational opportunity for individuals interested in protecting the natural beauty and local wildlife of Indiana. Participants will learn about native plants and animals, explore the links between their communities and ecosystems, and discover how to create wildlife-friendly habitat. Registration is required as space is limited.

Saturday, March 30 - A Home for Toad

  • Register by March 28
  • When: 1 – 2 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Ages: 6 years and up with an adult
  • Fee: $3 per toad abode

Toad abodes are not only attractive additions to your garden; they also provide a safe home for toads. Learn why these bumpy amphibians are important in your backyard and discover what else you can do to make them feel welcome, as you decorate your own toad abode. Registration is required as space is limited.
